Curing a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) with Oregano Oil

Urinary Tract Infection noun
Infection of any part of the urinary tract, esp. the urethra or bladder, usually caused by a bacterium, Escherichia coli, and often precipitated by increased sexual activity, vaginitis, enlargement of the prostate, or stress. Abbreviation: UTI

Treatment
Oregano oil: Twice a day, for three days, ingest 2-3 drops, diluted in a mind oil such as olive oil, or juice (undiluted, it will burn your mouth!). When I did it, I felt relief after the first day, but just as with antibiotics, it’s important to take it for the full three days to ensure the responsible bacteria have been killed off.

While I have read that this is sufficient all on it’s own to rid one of a UTI, the other thing I feel worth mentioning is that I threw in a clove or 2 of raw chopped garlic into my meals during those days, and the occasional glass of unsweetened, undiluted cranberry juice. It’s doubtful that garlic & cranberry on their own would be enough to solve the problem, but I feel that simple combinations are highly effective in targeting these sort of bacterial issues.

It’s been years since I had one, and I found that simply staying well hydrated is enough to prevent them. Urine after all, is sterile, and peeing flushes out whatever bacteria may have made their way up there.

The traditional treatment is of course antibiotics, which as you may have already gathered, I have a very low opinion of. As a matter of fact it was the treatment of a UTI which landed me in the hospital over 10 years ago, when a doctor was too lazy to write out a clear prescription, the pharmacy stupidly misinterpreted how many days-worth I should receive despite certain syntactical conventions to guard against these sort of things, and I, in my naive and unquestioning faith in western doctor’s & medicine, did not question it. (The scribble which should have been “3D,” or “3 days” was interpreted as “30,” or “30 days”), Around day 17 I got terribly sick and went to the hospital where the mistake was discovered. A week later my body seemed to develop a delayed allergic reaction, and I was hospitalized with a swollen face, a full-body rash and overwhelming fatigue, which was treated with corticosteroids and antihistamines, and took me a month to recover from. Hence the anti-antibiotic sentiments you will find sprinkled throughout the site.

  1. Natural remedies can often do the trick when it comes to successfully treating UTI. However, it might be necessary for you to treat the urinary tract infection with antibiotics if the natural remedies do not work fast enough. An appointment with your doctor will be best in determining the amount of time you should use a natural remedy before antibiotics need to be proscribed

I love the smell and taste of Oregano when added in some recipes.’;-

  3. LK says:

Yes, I may try the remedy. But occasionally have severe UTI’s with blood in the urine and extreme pain that puts me in the hospital by day 2 if not taken care of immediately. So while the natural remedy may be effective for mild cases, I’m not so sure about extreme ones.

  4. Anna Penn says:

I was just diagnosed with UTI but I have no pain just traces of blood in the urine. My doctor referred my to Urologist next weeek. They told me it could be anything from nothing to kidney stones to bladder cancer
I will try this natural remedy and will post the result.

  5. Crissy says:

The oregano oil I found was already in olive oil . How many drops will I need?

  6. The Macrobiotic Stoner says:

Crissy – if the oil states the %olive oil & %oregano oil, you could figure it out with the following equation: (100 / %oregano oil) x dosage. However I’d try to get the pure 100% oregano oil if you want to follow the method described – that’s what I used and worked for me, I don’t know how it would work with a combination oil like the one you have.

I have been plagued with chronic UTI’s since i was first married in 1979.- We found out years later the use of a diaphram was the culprit – the device would hold up the bladder and urine would pool and never empty, causing growth of bacteria in prime conditions of being moist and warm. I was in living hell, peeing fire for much of my married life. Doctors were left scratching their head and taking my money and i never found much relief. That was some 35 years ago and i have tried EVERY SINGLE tincture and rememdy known to man on the market plus seeing a plethera of urologists that knew nothing about how to cure this wretched thing. I have had a revelation over the last week. I started taking oregano oil under the tongue, drops in my water and slathered across my lower tummy area. – today is my 2nd day of no analgesics to stop the burn and my 3rd day of oregano oil and i’m here to report there is NO BURN, NO TWISTING, NO PRESSURE!!! it’s nothing short of a miracle. – i was told we can also use thyme oil as well..AND dont forget to put the oil on the bottoms of the feet as well. I have no faith in the western medical world and as long as i can find plant-based tinctures to use, i will!!! The type of oil i have is mixed with olive oil – other than smelling like an italian buffet i am SO grateful for this very important information!! = )

I’ve been using oil of oregano and cranberry juice for 3 days now. The pain and urgency is not as severe, but it’s still painful. Probably going to Dr. Tomorrow if not better. I’ve had wonderful luck with the oil of oregano when used to treat sore throat and sinus issues! I was really hopeful it would cure my UTI 🙁

I have cured a kidney infection with oregano oil after 3 different types of dr prescribed antibiotics failed. Sadly many doctors will tell folks not to take- keeps them in business I guess. Great post thanks

Six years ago I developed a bad UTI (no details needed). I went to a doctor, who put me on Cipro for 10 days. It did nothing (I later found out why). In the meantime, my insurance ran out, and I was still suffering. I called up my friend, author and world renowned fungi expert Doug Kauffmann. He explained to me that a lot of the antibiotics are nothing more than fungal poisons, called mycotoxins. In the huge amounts that make up antibiotics, they are called aflatoxins. They kill off the bacteria, but then take over doing the same thing. They are best followed up with an anti-fungal supplement. Doug had me take Oil of Oregano supplements for 10 days, followed by 10 days of Capryllic Acid supplements, and then 10 days of Clove supplements. I noticed a difference after 3 or 4 days. By the end of the 30 days, it was completely gone, and I’ve never seen a sign. Doug also recommended that I take 2 capsules of Olive Leaf Extract every other night, before going to bed, as a preventive maintenance measure. It’s best at night, to ensure that it stays in the body longer, as you sleep. There are some good doctors out there. Most, however, seem to stay with the AMA teachings. Some of that is worthwhile, but there are more natural alternatives to a lot of it. For more on the subject of fungi, and how it affects your body’s health, I recommend looking up Doug Kauffman online.

I was having severe pain in my pelvic area and lower back. I thought either a bladder or kidney infection. I have empty gel caps and I put 3 drops of oregano oil in the gel caps and drink with a lot of water. I was doing that twice a day and then decided to take 3 x’s a day after I eat. By day 2 my pain was completely gone. I am a firm believer in oregano oil. I even have my husband taking it. Whenever he feels like he is starting to get sick he puts 3 drops in a glass of orange juice and gulps it down. It is horrible stuff, I can not do it that way. But, he feels like it works better that way. I also have 5 year old twins and I mix 3 drops in a tablespoon of olive oil and rub it on the bottom of their feet and put socks on them when going to bed. I do this when they are sick or when I am trying to keep them from getting sick. Oregano oil is too strong for young children to take internally. Also, I need to add, that I usually have really bad back pain and when I mix olive oil with oregano oil and rub it on it takes the pain away pretty quick for about 3 to 4 hours. It does make you and your clothes stink so make sure you are not going anywhere soon.

After suffering (and throwing away thousands of dollars on tests and antibiotics that were poisoning me)with a recurrent uti for over a year and a half, I discovered wild oil of oregano. I started with putting it under my tongue several times a day but wasn’t getting the desired results, so I bought a bottle of the gel caps and began taking two every hour until the bottle was empty. I am now symptom free and well. My mind is once again clear and I have energy that I’ve not had in years. So yes, it works!

  15. Lana says:

I too am suffering from repeated cystitis, and now have bladder pressure and frequency, especially at night. I have been also trying to get rid of enterococcus, and Mika who posted in August last year, I was wondering did the oregano oil work in getting rid of the infection?

    Thanks
    Lana

D Mannose helps alot while taking antibiotic and D Mannose again after antibiotic is finished. It really helped me, my naturopath told me to use this.

First get clearance from a naturopath if you have Diabetes.

I do not remember how much I needed to take, if you can get hold of naturopath they can help set you up on a regimen.

Also very important to empty bladder before and after sex.

  17. Hi, my name is Acharya Hargreaves,

I was wondering if you could help me out with some advice. I recently went to a general doctor because of some grate pain I was having in my kidney area, The doctor found out from a urine test that I have a bad kidney infection that was causing my pain and so he prescribed me some Antibiotics to take.

I purchased them but I have not used them, instead I wanted to try a more natural cure if I could so I started taking capsules with 3 to 6 drops of Oil Of Oregano in them, 3 to 4 times a day.

It has been 3 days now and most of my kidney pain is gone and I have my energy back, however I can still feel the infection is still there and was wondering in your opinion how long will it take to completely cure an infection?

Also am I taking the right amount of Oregano Oil? or should I be taking more?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thinks

    Sincerely, Acharya Hargreaves

P.S. I also take 1 to 2 cloves of Raw Garlic every day as well.

I to have another UTI, I have antibiotics, took tree yesterday BUT now I am going to start as I had last w eek Oregano Oil four times a day in water, after thinking about what antibiotics do to your body.
My son cleared up his ? Pneumonia with this method.

  19. Sharon Morris says:

Love hearing all these success stories. I ordered the capsules and they arrive today. I can tell I have a UTI, third one in a year… I will let you know results. I do not want to take antibiotics again. The amount is 150 mg oil of oregano equal to 1,500 mg of fresh oregano. There is olive oil in it also.

What are some other health benefits you all know about? I read colds, sinus infection, even someone mentioned pneumonia. What about eczema and/or dermatitis? (my daughter has a bit on face… Topical treatment would be best I’m guessing).

Has anyone opened gel capsules to use topically, diluted in a carrier oil or coconut oil?

Does anyone know first hand the effect on blood sugar or blood pressure? I have had issues in the past and I have read two different things online. I am assuming when someone warns about avoiding if you have high bp or type 2 they really mean if you’re taking MEDS for it as it could lower both blood glucose and bp… (I do have an appt with my physician next week just FYI.).

I previously purchased Oil of Oregano(OOO) for its preventative uses. I had experienced a UTI many years ago. But recently, feelings of lethargy, bloating, and lower ab pain caused me to believe that I was on the verge of another UTI. I began to research the effects of OOO on UTIs and figured it was worth a try. I put 20 drops into about 8 oz of water and gulped it down. When I tell you INSTANT RELIEF….! It was amazing. I will continue to administer it about every 4 hours for a day, then taper down. My pain symptoms were gone immediately. I recommend mainly for those familiar enough with UTI to catch early symptoms. I am sure it works for full fledged UTIs but may take longer.

  21. Sharon Morris says:

Follow up. I took only 3 gelcaps a day, with meals, at first and UTI symptoms went away but came back recently. Did some research and realized I needed a higher dose this time. Symptoms went away after a day and so far so good.
I’m taking two 150 mg gelcaps 3 times a day, usually with meals. I will stop after 10 days and hope it stays gone.

  22. Kath says:

Oregano oil works for colds, I take it at the first sign and haven’t had a cold for more than 2 years. It should have high carvacrol content about 80%. This is the active ingredient. It will say on the label if it does.
I just get the straight oregano oil, some products mix with olive oil which is cheaper and easier on your digestive system and still quite effective.
Get empty capsules, put about 8 drops or so, I half fill size 00 capsules. Take with food or else you might do some burps which burn a little, not too bad. No more than 2 or 3 of these capsules in a day and not every day.
Take straight away don’t leave in the capsules as it will melt them soon. I did once and it took a tiny patch of varnish off the dining table!
Apparently if taken in excess it may cause miscarriage or anaemia so be careful and have respect for a very strong and effective natural medicine.

I have had UTI’S off and on for several years. I went to the doctor and he said I have a kidney infection. I am tired of taking antibiotics with their
terrible side effects. This doctor has prescribed the same medication for kidney infection as he did for a UTI. Does Oregano oil really work for a kidney infection? Any help will be appreciated .zw

We add an eyedropper of oil of oregano to a common 16 ounce water bottle of clean water. Each time we take a mouthful we swish gargle swallow at least 4 times a day. Kills stomach bugs e coli on through to kill bladder infections. Just eating a nice salad can introduce bacteria to our fragile insides. We always keep a 16 ounce marked bottle of this handy. Shake it and take a mouthful when the need arises too. Antiobiotics destroy bacteria only and never fungus because it is fungus itself. Oil of oregano destroys fungus parasites bacteria viruses etc.

All Im going to say is……I have used OOO for at least 6 years now and it has cured me of just about everything I used it for.
    1. When I got the Flu one year after getting the required flu shot at work…I took copious amounts of gel pills filled with oregano oil diluted with extra virgin olive oil. The pills are a brand called Thompson 150mg a pill. super cheap online or at health food store. The bottle is orange. I have no earthly idea how many I took at a time…maybe 6 every 2 hours for like 6 hours. Lots of water.
Do not give internally to children only on soles of feet. It really helped me greatly as that was a horrible 2 week illness…thought I would die but I lived!

    2. I am at the moment that I am typing taking it for the start of a urinary tract infection….so far so good and by the way….UTI….also take D-Mannose you can get it at any health food store and cranberry pills too. So I am taking all of that as I type this. I take 4 pills every few hours for a few days and maybe one or two a day after that for maintenance od oregano oil 150 mil gel pills. with lots of water. No soda!

    3. I used it to successfully treat a terrible sinus infection that travelled to my front tooth….horrible PAIN! I took about 4 – 150 mil gel pills of oregano oil with water every few hours….sometimes 6…! I also popped the pill and rubbed it on my sinus on my face and around my jaw where pain was radiating badly…I also brushed my teeth with it and tooth paste as it doesn’t taste well. I also applied some onto a q tip and held it on the painful tooth…its numbs very well. Just give some time and it will numb pain topically plus kill any bacteria as well.
Did that often. Took me about a week or more but it improved wonderfully. So far no dentist..no doctor…so far. 🙂

    4. Any cold….stomach bug…food poisoning…I take it and it resolves my issue.
I have been told that I can take up to 6 pills 150mg gel caps every hour or two..for like 6 or so hours….pleanty of water. But I only do that when the problem is super bad like flu.

I have done a lot of research on OOO and oil of oregano and I have learned its really good for so many things and I use it all of the time and have for years.
I have been told that it has cured mad cow disease….and even helps with imflammation and some cancers…. so research it and that’s all I got for now and thats how I use it for myself.
